6 Common Pests this Winter and 3 Ways to Stop Them Coming

Winter is coming or already here, and the household pests are coming to your Buffalo home, so it's time to protect your home and family now.

No matter where they come, whether it's the kitchens and bathrooms, attics, or in your crawl spaces, common house pests can infiltrate anywhere, so don't get caught unprepared, follow our tips and tricks, and defend your home this season.

Winter Pests in Buffalo

1. Carpenter ants

Carpenter ants cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage every year, and despite lacking the ability to digest wooden materials, carpenter ants incite havoc in a house, nevertheless.

Carpenter ants versus Termites:

  • The two forward wings of ants are longest, but all four termite wings are equally lengthed
  • Ants have three body segments, but termites have only two
  • Ants only carve the wood with their mandibles, but termites digest it because of bacteria in their digestive system
  • Termites are probably related to ancient cockroaches

2. Flies

Fruit flies and drain flies are some of the most common species of flies to encounter this season. Use a powerful drain cleaner you can purchase from your local hardware store.

Discourage pesky yearly fly infiltration by sealing all edibles in airtight containers, covering fruits with towels, or placing them in paper packages, especially sugary and starchy products, and frequently sanitizing your kitchen and bathrooms.

3. Spiders

Although spiders can bite, yearly spider venom mortality rates are minuscule compared to everyday activities like driving a vehicle, so rest assured that the danger is minimal.

However, if a spider bites you, take the dead spider along with you to the hospital for identification.

Black Widow

  • Renowned as the most poisonous spider, with venom 15 times more toxic than rattlesnake's
  • Few people experience long-lasting damage from black widow venom, especially if they go to the hospital right away
  • This spider hangs upside down in its messy web, and females (the most poisonous) have red markings on top of the abdomen (in some species) or the abdomen's underside
  • Usually isolates in a secluded corner of garages or basements

Brown Recluse

  • This spider produces highly toxic, necrotic venom that can leave the victim with painful ulcerating blisters
  • Sandy brown coloration throughout its body
  • Body approximately 1/2 inch long with spindly legs
  • They don't like to come out often and prefer to isolate themselves in crevices that they accommodate for nesting by spinning silk
  • They don't create capture webbing and utilize their silk only for nesting

4. Mice and Rats

Mice and rats can spread diseases, so do whatever you can to prevent rodents from gaining access. Keep in mind that your food and pet food is a significant attractant (see below for additional details)

  • Use an automated vacuum cleaner system that can run at night, which will help reduce their nocturnal activity
  • Clean the property of fallen fruits or vegetation, which will undoubtedly attract rodents
  • Empty all garbage containers inside the house daily
  • Ensure the outside dumpster completely seals and is placed at least 20 feet from the house

5. Bed bugs

  • Considered to be a health hazard by the EPA and CDC
  • Only feed on mammalian blood, especially human blood
  • Most active at night, but can emerge when lighting is turned on or when starving
  • Even nymphs can live for months without feeding

6. Cockroaches

Cockroaches consume the food and water you do every day, and they can spread disease most easily that way.

Roach Food Sources

  • Dairy products
  • Grain products
  • Meat products
  • Human feces
  • Dead skin and fallen hair follicles
  • Blood, dried or fresh

3-Step Pest Protection

1. Seal Entry Points

Use silicone caulking to seal the following areas:

  • Cracks and crevices around doors and windows
  • Cracks along foundations and sill plates
  • Gaps around utility pipes

2. Reduce Harborages and Attractants

  • Keep plants away from house siding cracks and store firewood at least 20 feet from the home
  • Clean fallen limbs and branches
  • Trim tree branches and shrubs away from the house
  • Seal all food in airtight containers, especially pet food products

3. Elimination

  • Mix water and dish soap and spray and intruder vigorously
  • Spiders and rats dislike the smell of peppermint, so purchase a humidifier
  • Sanitize regularly and keep a cleaning regimen

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
