Control Cockroaches in your Buffalo area Home

If you've ever come across one, you'll want to get rid of roaches as quickly as possible from your home in the Buffalo area. But rumors exist about roach infestations that can make pest control difficult to kill roaches without fears. Learn the facts about a cockroach infestation and what to do to eradicate roaches.

Cockroach Facts

Local Cockroach Species

All these critters originated in tropical or subtropical regions but have adapted to city life and harsher environments. As surprising as it may seem, your Buffalo area home is the prime environment for them to find food and shelter. Here are the species you're most likely to find:

  • American Cockroach | Periplaneta americana

This reddish-brown or darker brown species is found everywhere throughout the globe. They range in size from one to 1.5 inches long, though they can grow larger. They have flat bodies, well-developed wings, and long antennae. Females lay eggs in a sack called an ootheca and deposit them in a secluded location near food until they are fully ready to emerge.

  • German Cockroach | Blattella germanica

The German roach is found in nearly as many global locations as the American roach. Its coloration is a light, yellowish-brown, and they can range in size from 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch long. The ootheca casings about two-thirds the length of their bodies, usually bean-shaped, light-colored, and contain 40 eggs or more.

Myths and Facts

Roaches are capable of squeezing into the tiniest cracks, especially the minuscule German roach, but don't worry. They are unlikely to skitter over your bed during sleep, and cockroaches generally won't deliver a bite of any kind, nor can they sting or poison anyone. They rarely fly and prefer to travel on their elongated legs to skitter from one meal to the next.

When roach populations reach large numbers, large enough to warrant a migration, then the critters take to flight. They are scavengers, so a scarcity of food in a particular area is rare and even rarer for them to begin a migration due to overpopulation. Large population increases occur most dramatically when they have access to food and water and when the humidity and temperature are moderate.

Cockroaches have three main life stages, called the egg stage, the nymph stage, and the adult stage. Nymphs shed their exoskeleton in a process called molting to allow their rapid body development. A female can lay multiple ootheca casings during her lifetime, and each ootheca contains numerous eggs, as mentioned above, in number between 16 to 40 eggs, depending on the species.

Roaches are hardy and can endure harsh conditions. They can live long periods without their heads, a period from 10 days to three weeks. They die due to the lack of water.

Roach Foods

Favorite food sources for roaches include everything in a human diet, including milk products like cheese, meat products from every type of meat or poultry, bread or other grain products like pastries, straight table sugar, or sweets like chocolate.

Cockroaches prefer starchy or sugary food, but they will also consume products with sugar-based or starch-based adhesives, such as cardboard, bindings in books or ceiling boards, other glues utilized in modern, residential, or business construction, glues used in the manufacture of clothing or shoes. Cockroaches also consume their own molts, or discarded exoskeletons, other cockroaches when deceased or incapacitated, human excrement, dried blood, sputum from sick persons, and fingernails softened by age or disease.

Damages and risks of the presence of cockroaches in your Buffalo area home include the spread of diseases. Cockroaches aren't prime carriers for transmittable diseases but are acknowledged to be potential vectors that promulgate or prolong diseases, such as:

  • Cholera
  • Dysentery
  • Leprosy
  • Black and bubonic plagues
  • Poliomyelitis
  • Diarrhea
  • Typhoid Fever

The greatest direct dangers from direct or indirect contact with cockroaches include the contraction of parasitic worm eggs they can carry on their bodies, allergic reactions caused by their molts and other excrements, and generally a nuisance and bother. These creatures are mainly considered to be a nuisance pest.

What They Leave Behind

Roaches rarely are seen during the day, so if you discover one running across your kitchen counters, you are guaranteed to have a serious infestation. Seek professional assistant for roach management if you suspect a major infestation in your home or business. Here are some of the most common signs of an infestation:

  • Egg cases can be found in cracks near a food source
  • Molts can be left behind when roaches shed their exoskeletons during the early stages of development
  • Fecal matter they leave behind looks like black pepper and is sticky to the touch. Clean these away immediately, as they can cause allergic reactions. Be cautious when seeking these signs, and wear protective gear, including gloves and a face mask
  • Odors they excrete are often described as musty. The stronger the smell, the larger the infestation

Where to Look

Using a flashlight and wearing proper protective or sanitation gear, including gloves and a mask, look for the above signs in all the cracks and crevices of the following areas:

  • Throughout the kitchen
  • Along baseboards and ceiling molds
  • Inside, behind, and under food or utility cupboards and cabinets
  • Inside sinks and sink cabinets
  • Air return vents and other heating ducts
  • Under, around, and behind all kitchen appliances, including the stove or oven unit, refrigerator, toaster or toaster oven, microwave, blenders, or food mixers
  • Water pipe access cabinets and other water access areas, including drains

Everyday Roach Management

Major cockroach infestations may need a professional to get rid of them. However, there are measures you can take now. Keep in mind that not all consumer-grade products are good enough to get rid of these pests on their own, due to roaches developing resistance to most low-grade pesticides.

  • Gel Bait Stations

Many roach killer kits have been made to help a regular consumer fight and kill roaches in their homes. Again, keep in mind that many consumer products will not always work against resistant roaches. Bait stations and gel bait is an effective method since roaches will avoid an area that kills them instantly, as with some pesticides.

  • Boric acid

This is a good solution, but it doesn't have a residual effect. Boric acid is used in everyday home use products. Find this acid at your local department store and apply it in areas you have found roach signs. Be careful not to put this acid near an air duct because it can be harmful to pets, children, or the elderly.

  • Sanitation

Rumors out there say that a dirty house can cause a roach infestation, but this isn't true. Roaches are attracted to a warm place with plenty of water and food available, not grime or clutter. However, regular cleaning will help keep roaches at bay. Consider purchasing an automatic vacuum cleaner that can run at night when roaches are active to keep them from coming out in the open.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
