The Most Dangerous Spider Control Issues This Winter

Luckily, there aren’t many dangerous spiders indigenous to the Buffalo area. Most spiders are just a nuisance because of the webs they weave. Any spider will try to invade the comfort of your warm Buffalo home this winter, so watch for these more dangerous spiders and take steps to prevent an invasion this winter.

The most notorious spiders in the United States are the brown recluse and the black widow spider. Neither of these spiders is native to upstate New York because of the extreme temperatures in the Buffalo area during the winter. However, if you come across a black widow or a brown recluse, do not try to pick it up or catch it. Use a vacuum to eliminate the spider, and if you are bitten, seek emergency medical attention immediately. Black widow venom is considered 15 times deadlier than the venom of a rattlesnake. Eliminate spider problems this winter with the following steps and guidelines.

Two Dangerous Spiders of Upstate New York

Yellow-sac spiders | Two types of spiders go by the name yellow-sac spider: Cheiracanthium mildei and Cheiracanthium inclusum.

These spiders are poisonous but are not considered deadly. However, their bites are slow to heal and create ulcer sores. They stalk vegetation that grows near houses and often make their way inside. If you are bitten by a spider of any kind, consult a doctor immediately.

Yellow-sac Spider Description:

  • Yellow in color
  • Not web builders, but they do make silk
  • Dark yellow fangs
  • Visible spinnerets
  • Silk sacs used for nests and shelter. This is where they get their name.

Wolf Spiders | Scientific name: Lycosidae

Wolf spiders are poisonous but not considered deadly. Their bites are annoying and can swell and grow puffy and red. If you are bitten by a spider of any kind, seek medical attention immediately.

Wolf Spider Description:

  • Do not spin webs. Prefer to use their fast running and keen eyesight to stalk and ambush prey
  • Brown in color and covered in hair on abdomen and legs
  • Some can mistake them for a small tarantula
  • Most species have stripes, usually black, on the abdomen
  • Females carry egg sacs on the underside of the abdomen with their spinnerets

The most poisonous spiders in the United States are the brown recluse and the black widow. However, the harsh winters of upstate New York have eradicated these two poisonous spiders from the Buffalo area. However, some brown recluse or black widows can make their way by hitchhiking. If you are bitten by any kind of spider, seek medical attention immediately.

Prevent a Spider Infestation

Regardless of how poisonous a spider is, no one wants spiders to enter their home or business. Follow these steps to prevent spiders from coming inside in the first place.

  • Clean and disinfect your house Although spiders are not attracted to filth, clutter provides places for them to hide. Clean and disinfect the corners of rooms to deter spiders.
  • Vacuum often If you find a house spider in your Buffalo area home, a good way to deal with spiders is to suck them away with the vacuum cleaner. This is a quick fix for cobwebs and other spider webs.
  • Seal your food in airtight containers to prevent the infestation of your home by spider food sources, such as flies, cockroaches, or other insects, which will attract spiders inside your home.
  • Seal cracks and crevices of your home with silicone caulking, with special attention around pipe entry points, sill plates, and cracks around your foundation. Replace or repair window screens and seal gaps around windows and doors. Install and maintain door sweeps and weather strips.
  • Trim vegetation around your home at least two feet from the perimeter, including grass, bushes, or other shrubberies. Most webbing species of spiders use long vegetation or bushes for hunting and ambush grounds, so keep these areas clean and clear to reduce activity from spiders and other pests.
  • Turn off Outdoor Lights During the night, cover your windows and extinguish outdoor lights to prevent flies, moths, or other spider food sources from coming near your home. Spiders like wolf spiders and yellow-sac spiders could chase prey inside without the homeowner being aware.
  • Firewood and compost Firewood piles are prime places for spider activity. Place firewood and compost piles at least twenty feet from your home, and keep them at least one foot off the ground. Rotate your firewood pile often, and always wear gloves when doing so, just in case you disturb a spider’s nest.

Home Remedies for Spider Control

Use these techniques to control a spider infestation already in your home.

  • Vinegar

Mix white vinegar and water in a half-and-half solution. Pour into a spray bottle and apply to cracks and crevices where spiders might hide. Use this on the outside of your home as well for an effective spider deterrent. If you find a spider, the acid in the vinegar will burn the spider, though it may or may not kill spiders on contact.

  • Peppermint or Eucalyptus Oil

These essential oils have been scientifically proven to deter spiders. Mix 20 drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil into 30 ounces of water and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Use real, essential eucalyptus or peppermint oil, not just extract. Spray areas where spiders are usually found, especially along the junction where baseboards and the carpet or floor meet, in the corners where the walls and ceiling meet, around door and window frames, around window sills. Consider purchasing an essential oil humidifier to keep the scent around your house.

  • Citrus, Garlic, and Cedar

These scents are not proven to deter spiders, though people have observed that spiders avoid the scent. Spread the juice from lemon rinds around your kitchen, bedroom, and closets, and keep a fresh clove of garlic around to keep the spiders at bay. Purchase balls or cuts of cedarwood to hang in closets and keep on bookshelves or in desk drawers.

  • Other Remedies

Over-the-counter products can be effective, including insecticides and glue traps. But these products often do not stop a large spider infestation and are not always effective for the long term.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
