As one of the largest suburbs in Erie County, the town of Cheektowaga includes large numbers of homes tightly packed together. Combined with the cold winters that sweep off of Lake Erie, these factors make rodents a serious pest problem throughout the area. Mice and rats will contaminate food, gnaw holes in walls and food containers, carry fleas and ticks, and spread diseases such as rat-bite fever, Hantavirus, and, though less common, the plague.
Cheektowaga also features a few wooded areas, such as Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, the land along Cayuga Creek, the land around Bowmansville and Ellicott Creek, and areas between neighborhoods. Cheektowaga’s high humidity and these wooded areas make excellent places for fleas and ticks to thrive. Fleas and ticks make their way onto lawns and gardens by hitching rides on wild animals, including raccoons, squirrels, rodents, and even deer. Unfortunately, ticks spread diseases like Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF).
Because of its high humidity and hot summers, Cheektowaga is also susceptible to problems with bed bugs. Although they were once thought to be eradicated from the United States, bed bugs have now been on the rise for the past few decades. Only the size of an apple seed, bed bugs can infest any building, no matter how sanitary the conditions are. Hotels and motels are most notorious for having bed bug infestations, but they most often occur in normal residential buildings like apartments, town homes, multi-family houses, and single-family homes. Bed bugs can be picked up almost anywhere, from public transportation such as trains or buses, an infested couch in a coffee shop, or from an overnight stay at a family member’s house. Luckily, bed bugs aren’t known to transmit diseases, but many people experience a huge amount of distress because of these invasive pests.
Fleas, ticks, and bed bugs require professional treatment. If you suspect an infestation, call Fox Pest Control immediately.
Buffalo technician Greg has many memories from the Cheektowaga area. Since he grew up in the area, Greg is no stranger to Cheektowaga;. he even walked to and from school every day as a kid. He would make his trek no matter the weather: rain, shine, snow, or hail, you could always count on Greg to make his way to and from school.
